I don't think I know how to check--I figured if I ever got one someone would clue me like I've seen them do for others.

Refreshing to hear your recollections, mentallyfree. This is a complex subject for me too. But I was raised an Army brat around WWII and Korean War veterans. Vietnam picked up the pieces that some of these men had left over.
The dips and turns, the contradiction and confusion of esprit de corps among any organization where they march to one drum in carnal OR spiritual war can make it had to separate what was good and what was not.
There was great comeraderie--------------but death to the enemy.
Men's self-sacrificing loyalty staggers the imagination------------even if they were given bad orders by incompetent leaders.
Men risked and gave their lives for their brothers-in-arms ---------------but the the military itself practiced triage.
These guys were funny, strong, resourceful, smart, and in the prime of their lives--What an image in certain frames of the camera. But if ever they questioned what was up with the war they were fighting----The firing squad.
I won't stretch the analogy too far here. I'm not writing an anti-war treatise. It is just that some guys couldn't separate the good things that human beings just do from the bad purpose that they may be serving. One that in the end will not even grant them their own conscience.
So there were for me those moments, too. And now I am the enemy.

I didn't see the Shameful Prime Ape anywhere around.
What makes him so high and mighty?

As Sylvia says, chill.
When I thought my world was bursting--yes there were chill pills and doctors. That wasn't available for me.
There was this comfort: God takes care of his precious resources. If you are determined that you are His, then don't plunge headlong anywhere. Chill ,with or without pills---with or without a doctor. But do be still, somehow, and know that He is the Lord.
About the WTS. Just remember the frustration in the military of not getting to own your conscience. Think of that in spiritual matters now. Is that okay with you? The WTS do NOT let you follow your own conscience. They tell you that they will give you a Bible-trained Conscience but it is a religion trained conscience a man-trained conscience. Do you want that?
Trust God.

Are there any decent arguments for God's existence which do not fall prey to the argument from ignorance fallacy? (i.e. God of the gaps)
by Psychotic Parrot ingod of the gaps arguments are simply not convincing, god is no more likely to be the correct gap filler than anything else, in any case where god is squeezed into a gap, we could easily just fill it with (for example) a committee of eternally existing physical lifeforms, god is no more plausible than they are as an explanation.
as for the arguments themselves:.
the cosmological argument = god of the gaps: we think (though we are not certain) that the universe had a beginning, it was probably the big bang, the big bang needed a cause.

My G'Daughter Is a Latch-key Kid
by snowbird inshe's eleven, and rides the bus to and from school.. i used to have a van pick her up and drop her off, but the expense was too much.. she walks to and from the bus stop with the kids next door.
they are very good to her - they wait until she gets inside our house before they go into theirs.
when our cat escapes, they help round her up.. today, she forgot her key, and their mama called me and let me know she'll be staying at her house until i get off work.. mama will be giving her something to eat, right along with her kids.

I used to love it when someone would point out the kindness of others who were not Witnesses. The Good Samaritan who wasn't one of the "Chosen People"-
You make me feel good, Sylvia

It is tough. But Just be sure that she doesn't have absolutely NO other friends or exposure to really good stuff outside the JW friends. She does need real interaction--An art class for the two of you? An involvement that would incidently engage her and involve being around other interesting folks?
Hoping for the best.
